In the US, the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal and the Gloucester Marine Terminal have reopened for business having escaped with only minor damage from Hurricane Sandy, which struck the US earlier this week.
'Many communities were not as lucky as we have been, and outreach efforts have begun to get assistance to friends and customers in whatever way possible,' said Leo Holt, president of Holt Logistics Corp, which represents the operators of the two terminals. 'Emergency crews spent the storm bunkered in and reported the progress of the storm. We were glad to report only minor damages and are up and running.'
In accordance with US coastguard directives for Sector Delaware Bay – which includes Philadelphia, South Jersey, the Delaware Bay and the Jersey Shore – all vessel traffic was briefly suspended during Hurricane Sandy.
Holt noted that the port’s location 90 miles inland helped protect the terminal facilities from damage, in turn speeding up its ability to reopen after the hurricane had passed.
