papayas

The USDA has cleared imports of Peruvian papayas following a meeting with the Peruvian agriculture minister on 23 April in Washington DC to discuss market access on a number of fruits and vegetables from the Andean nation.

The USDA is due to publish a final rule on 24 April allowing imports of fresh papayas under the same entry conditions as other countries with immediate effect. It is also expected to clear imports of fresh peppers and announce a proposed notice for an updated treatment schedule for oversized mangoes that will open up the market following a 60-day comment period.

“Both Peruvian agriculture minister Juan Manuel Benites Ramos and USDA under secretary Ed Avalos recognise that the strong relationship between the Peru and US governments has been enhanced by the US-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement, which cam into effect on 1 February 2009,” the USDA said in a statement. “Also combatting trade barriers is the Trans-Pacific Partnership, of which both Peru and the US are strong advocates, supporting market access for our respective domestic products based on sound science.”
