US pears Red Anjou

With this year's US northwest pear campaign just around the corner, industry body Pear Bureau Northwest has been looking back on what it has called a successful export season in 2011/12.

According to Jeff Correa, International Marketing director at the Bureau, some 168,000 tonnes of pears were sold to export markets in 2011/12 under the USA Pears banner, with Mexico and Canada the leading importers.

Correa told The Produce News that volumes to Brazil had been solid but had endured some problems on arrival, while there had been a dip in volume to Russia due to the availability of European pears.

Hong Kong was the best market in the Pacific Rim, he continued, with India and the Middle East representing good growth markets.

Looking ahead to the coming campaign, Correa told the publication that weather has been good, with the crop on track to hit a large estimate, while pear sizing could be larger than last year.
