The Building America's Future (BAF) organisation has advised the US to find US$200bn a year to fund a long-term infrastructure revitalisation plan.
In its 'Falling Apart and Falling Behind' report, the bipartisan coalition – which includes New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger – examined problems with the US's port infrastructure.
Kerry O'Hare, the BAF's vice-president and director of policy, warned: "US port volume is expected to double by 2020. Freight tonnage is expected to increase by 85% by 2035. Our freight infrastructure is not equipped to handle these increases."
The report also uncovered similar issues around the country's highway, freight rail and airport infrastructure.
