The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has widened its import tracking data of Mexican fresh fruits and vegetables entering the US market.
The USDA’s Agriculture Marketing Service’s market data collection agency (Market News) will now report on produce crossing at 10 individual points along the Texas-Mexico border, allowing US importers to more thoroughly forecast business needs.
Originally, all Mexican produce through Texas was tracked as one single crossing, but the system has been changed in response to requests from the produce industry and transportation firms.
“Our expanded crossings report paints a more complete market picture, reflecting not only the quantity, but FOB pricing as well,” USDA explained in its blog.
“Knowing these factors for several different crossing points will help the US produce industry as a whole make informed decisions about the pricing and marketing of their produce.”
USDA Market News' reports now show Mexican produce entering the US through Brownsville, Los Indios, Progreso, Rio Grande City, Roma, Pharr, Laredo, Presidio, El Paso, Del Rio and Eagle Pass.
Over 13bn lbs of fresh fruit and vegetables cross the US-Mexican border each year.
