Import shipment volume into the US decreased by 9.94 per cent (in TEUs) during February compared with the previous month, but rose 9.03 per cent over February 2010, according to Zepol Corporation, the leading trade intelligence company.

The total number of shipments also declined by 11.09 per cent against January and increased 7.27 per cent over last February.

Year to date, total imports in TEUs are up by 13.24 per cent in 2011 compared with 2010, Zepol said.

Volume from Asia fell to levels seen in December 2010, decreasing by 11.42 per cent from January to February of this year.

However, Zepol said imports from Central America, rose 4.88 per cent from January to February as fresh fruit imports took an upward turn.

Ports on the Atlantic Coast show the greatest increases in volumes for February 2011 over January 2011, the report said.

The most noteworthy increases were West Palm Beach, Florida and Chester, PA with increases of 37.86 per cent and 18.73 per cent respectively.

Overall, import volume dropped on the Pacific coast with an overall average decrease of 14.15 per cent in comparison to January, according to the data.

Maersk Line continues to hold the top carrier spot, however, the shipping company experienced a volume decline of 10 per cent between January and February.
