With 211mn inhabitants, Brazil becomes a promising new market for Uruguayan growers
Uruguay will be able to sell fresh persimmons to Brazil, following the publication in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) of new phytosanitary rules authorising exports. With more than 211mn inhabitants, Brazil opens a new avenue for this burgeoning industry.
Commercial persimmon production is a recent introduction to Uruguay. Most farms are located in the north of the country (Salto and Paysandú departments) and in the south (Canelones and San José). The harvest runs from March to around May. To date, the main export destinations have been the European Union—especially Spain—and, to a lesser extent, Canada.
The move marks the latest step in Uruguay’s efforts to boost the competitiveness of its fresh fruit industry by expanding into new export markets.
