Port of Wilmington

The fire which has disrupted cargo and truck-loading operations at the Port of Wilmington, Delaware – the largest banana port in the US – is now under control and being contained.

According to the latest notice from the US East Coast-based Port of Wilmington, ship discharging operations fully resumed at local time yesterday morning, 10 April, while terminal truck loading operations were set to resume at 1pm local time.

'Traffic on Christiana Ave is still limited with previously communicated detours still in effect,' the facility explained.

'Traffic on Terminal Avenue, the main route into the Port, has remained open and unaffected by the fire event.'

Cargo operations at the Dole and Chiquita vessels were suspended on Monday 9 April, together with all truck-loading operations at all refrigerated warehouses, according to The Associated Press.

The fire apparently began when mulch, wooden pallets and tyres set alight at a recycling facility at 610 Christiana Avenue on Sunday 8 April.

The situation has been exacerbated by high winds which blew the fire from one mulch pile to another.
