Univeg Group subsidiary Univeg-Legumex Trade, a full service fresh produce supplier based in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium, has reportedly acquired the exclusive rights to produce and market two new apple varieties.
According to a report in the Dutch industry newspaper Agrarisch Dagblad, the apple varieties are both crosses between Gala and Braeburn and have been developed by Belgian organisation Better3Fruit – responsible for developing varieties including Greenstar and Kanzi.
'Both varieties are green with a red flush, have a slighty sour taste and are crisp and juicy,' Legumex general director Peter Hostens told the publication.
As yet, neither of the cultivars have been given brand names, but production of the apples is already understood to be underway, with Belgian auction Haspengouw said to be helping Univeg on this front.
Univeg is also understood to be assessing possible options for producing the cultivars in the Southern Hemisphere in order to achieve year-round supply.
