The United Fresh Produce Association has called for a longer comment period for parts of the proposed US Food Safety Modernisation Act ahead of a 15 February deadline.
According to United, its members are currently in the midst of an 'exhaustive' review process and need a greater amount of time to respond to rules that will have a 'far reaching effect on the industry'.
'The request is consistent with the time needed to properly respond, especially given that three additional proposed rules, on Foreign Supplier Verification, Preventive Controls for Animal Feed, and Accredited Third-Party Certification, are scheduled to be released in the near future and will also impact the industry,' explained United's senior vice-president of food safety and technology David Gombas.
