The latest FreshFacts on Retail report from United Fresh Foundation and Nielsen Perishables Group has shown that fresh produce maintained stable sales in the US figures during the third quarter of 2012 (Q3).

Decreases in average retail price boosted volume sales, the report revealed, particularly for fruit categories, with organic and value-added fruits and vegetables continuing their strong sales performance.

While vegetables declined in overall dollar and volume sales, total produce sales and volume grew. According to the report, other produce, a category defined by products such as grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, dressings and beverages, increased compared with the same period of last year.

The quarterly report also found that nine of the top ten fruits posted volume increases that exceeded the same period last year, while avocados, specialty fruits and grapes were the primary drivers of volume growth in fruits and cucumbers, packaged salads, and mushrooms led the way in vegetables.

Value-added fruits increased dollar and volume sales by 8.8 per cent and 1.3 per cent, respectively, and value-added vegetables’ growth outperformed their fruit counterparts, with a 10.2 per cent increase in dollar sales and a 10.6 per cent volume increase.
