A hearing by the US House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Health is taking place today (11 March), addressing reforms in national food safety laws, with a series of representatives testifying from the likes of Chiquita Brands and the National Center for Food Safety and Technology.

Tom Stenzel, president and CEO of the United Fresh Produce Association, is set to appear at the hearing (entitled 'How Do We Fix Our Ailing Food Safety System?') to emphasise the industry's commitment to improving food safety and reiterate the benefits of consuming fruit and vegetables.

'This is an important opportunity for the produce industry to be heard on what is a critical priority,' said Mr Stenzel in a press release. 'The decisions made on Capitol Hill today and in the near future will shape the way the entire fresh produce chain does business. It is imperative that our industry has a strong voice at these deliberations.'

Mr Stenzel will also make recommendations on how state and federal governments should react to future outbreaks, in addition to discussing preventative controls.

'We'll continue to work with all members of the House and Senate as they address a variety of food safety legislative proposals this year,' he added. 'We commend the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee for holding this hearing which will further serious congressional consideration of ways to improve our nation's food safety system.'

The hearing will mark the eighth that United Fresh has testified at since 2006 on food safety oversights and legislative reforms to food safety laws.
