Spanish vegetable exporter Unica Group has reportedly become the Mediterranean country's largest tomato supplier after reaching a deal to take over Almería-based company Parque Natural.
The merger, set to be implemented during the 2013/14 season, is expected to increase Unica's tomato turnover to more than €200m and will see it market production of around 195,000 tonnes per year.
Parque Natural is believed to be currently Spain's largest supplier ofon-the-vinetomatoes and the company also specialises in watermelons.
Its 96 members grow the two items across a production area of 240ha, turning out around 28,000 tonnes for an annual sales turnover of approximately €20m.
