El Ejido-based grower-exporter Camposol has announced that it is to join Unica Group from next season. The company becomes the tenth to join the rapidly expanding group, whose production is spread over Almería, Granada and Murcia.
Camposol markets around 20,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables a year, its star product being peppers. With the incorporation of Camposol, Unica’s production volume looks set to reach 270,000 tonnes in the 2016/17 season.
“The key to our exponential growth is that from the very beginning this project has been about integration,” said Unica’s president José Martínez Portero.
“Because the directors of all the cooperatives are involved in running the group this provides total transparency for their members and means we can keep production costs down and operate more efficiently.”
Unica was established in 2009 and is made up of Cabasc, Casur, Cohorsan, Camposol, Cota 120, El Grupo, Ferva, Parque Natural, Agrolevante and Parafruts. Its production covers 2,000ha of greenhouses and 700ha of open-field cultivation.
The group provides five main product lines: vegetables, leafy vegetables, melons and watermelons, fruit and snack products. Its main export markets include Germany, the UK, France, Denmark, Austria and Poland.
