Israel citrus

Israeli fresh produce exporter UMS Trade says it plans to expand its citrus and tomato business in Europe during 2010.

The company's Ari Goren confirmed that the group expected to market and export over 65,000 tonnes of Israeli fresh produce during what is set to be a challenging 2010.

In particular, UMS will look to expand its long-standing citrus business, having sourced a large private grower who recently built new, state-of-the-art facilities in the south of the country.

The group's new Tenne brand has already appeared in a number of markets and is set to give UMS extra produce in the second part of the Israeli export season, Mr Goren confirmed.

'This will complement the early Gilboa brand grown in the north,' he explained. 'Acting as the marketing arm for these two growers, UMS will have a large range of varieties for supply throughout the season.'

Meanwhile, a group of specialised, high-quality cherry tomato growers recently approached UMS to represent them in designated markets.

Their product is grown in the northern Negev region, which is well known for producing excellent quality tomatoes thanks to its ideal weather conditions and sandy soil.

'They will grow 1,500 tonnes of cherry and vine tomatoe year round, representing close to 25 per cent of total Israeli exports of this product,' Mr Goren revealed.

As of 1 January 2010, UMS is acting as the exclusive marketing channel for the D-vine tomato brand, targeting quality retailers in the UK, central Europe and Russia.
