New data released by market analyst Kantar Worldpanel has revealed a drop in UK retail share for market leaders Tesco and Asda during the 12-week period ended 5 September 2010.

According to the group, Tesco's market share slipped from 30.9 per cent in the same period of 2009 to 30.8 per cent this year, while Walmart-owned Asda saw its share down from 17.4 per cent to 17.2 per cent – the retailer's ninth successive year-on-year fall.

Sainsbury's further established its position as the third-largest grocery retailer by market share with an increase from 15.8 per cent last year to 16 per cent, representing a nineteenth successive monthly year-on-year share increase.

Morrisons' market share climbed to 11.4 per cent from 11.3 per cent last year, Kantar noted, while Waitrose also saw an increase, up to 4.1 per cent from 3.9 per cent in 2009.

However, the combined market share of discount retailers Aldi, Netto and Lidl dropped from 6.1 per cent in 2009 to 6 per cent this year.
