Spain’s largest mango exporter, Trops, is to open a new, €17m facility close to its head office in the southern province of Vélez-Málaga, which the company believes has the potential to triple its current business volume.
Work began on the 14,200 plant, which will include a packhouse and a factory to develop mango and avocado-derived products, in December 2010 and is expected to be concluded in March in time for its opening.
In a statement, Trops’ managing director, Enrique Colilles, said the facility would enable the company to “significantly increase” current production levels, with the potential to add 170 new posts.
Trops, which acts as a marketer for tropical fruit growers and cooperatives in Málaga province, currently manages 60 per cent of the mangoes produced in Spain and 30 per cent of avocados.
