Seed company looking to popularise consumption of fresh celery in Spain
Seed specialist Tozer held a celery tasting at last week’s Fruit Attraction as part of a long-term collaboration with Spain’s 5-a-day association, 5 al día.
“As a leading vegetable seed supplier, we’re committed with the promotion of fresh produce consumption around the world,” said David Rogers, commercial director at Tozer. “In Spain, particularly, celery consumption is still low as it’s mainly consumed cooked and not fresh like in the rest of Europe. With these tastings, we want to promote raw celery as a great alternative snack.”
Nuria Martínez Barea, director of 5 al día, commented: “Celery is a vegetable that’s often underrated by Spanish consumers. This is only due to the lack of information and awareness. That’s why we’re very excited to implement promotional activities like this with our partner Tozer. I believe there’s a big potential for growth in celery consumption in Spain”.
With its low-calorie content, high water, and fibre levels, celery is a good option for those looking to improve their diet. Rich in vitamins A, B, C, K, and key nutrients like potassium and folic acid, celery provides numerous health benefits.
Studies have shown that it suppress appetite and aids in weight management and promotes regular bowel movements. According to research from the University of Chicago, regular consumption can also lower harmful cholesterol and blood pressure.
Tozer is a market leader in celery seeds, offering some of the most popular celery varieties in the market. These include Cleopatra, known for its slow bolting and heat tolerance; Monterrey, a variety producing very fleshy tight sticks that hold well in the autumn; Julius, that is popular in the pre-packed segment; and Loretta, a vigorous and fast growing variety that produces succulent, smooth and upright sticks.
