High humidity after 20 days of non-stop rain also causing severe damage to crop
More than 300ha of berry production have been affected by the tornadoes that passed through the Huelva towns of Palos, Moguer, Lucena, Lepe, and Cartaya on Tuesday night.
The tornadoes mainly affected berry farms, especially greenhouses with large tunnels, where metal frames have been bent and plastic has been blown away.
But tornadoes aren’t the only ones affecting this season. The humidity in the atmosphere, after 20 days of non-stop rain, is also causing severe damage to strawberry crops.
Industry association Freshuelva said prolonged and heavy rainfall during February and the first half of March has delayed fruit ripening and rendered 15-20 per cent of the crop unmarketable,.
Álvaro Burgos, provincial delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture, said the season is becoming more complicated by the minute. Other crops affected in the province of Huelva include olives, citrus, cereals and wine.
