Mangoes

Brazil’s mango industry is experiencing a mixed marketing season on its key Northern Hemisphere markets according to local sources in the trade.

Exports to the US are set to rise considerably this year due to an expected delay to the start of the Ecuador deal.

Meanwhile, volume to Europe is down as a result of an unfavourable real-euro exchange rate and slow demand in Europe.

Brazil’s 2012 export crop is expected to weigh in at 6.7m cartons, up from 6.2m cartons in 2011, of which about 20 per cent is destined for the US.

Ecuador exported a total of 9.6m 4.5kg cartons during 2011/12 but there is a lot of uncertainty about volume for this season following higher-than-normal temperatures in recent weeks.

Despite the warm spell, meteorologists are predicting an early and unusually cold winter season, which could derail Ecuador’s mango exports further down the line.

The weather in Brazil has reportedly been excellent, however, with higher-than-average temperatures.

The full reports will be published in the September issue of Eurofruit and the August/September issue of Americafruit.
