Guinness Peat Group (GPG), the majority shareholder of New Zealand produce marketer Turners & Growers, has dismissed New Zealand director Tony Gibbs from its board after he publicly opposed plans to split its Australian arm into a separate business.

GPG said Mr Gibbs, who is also Turners & Growers' chairman, didn't consult the board before making his feelings known, meaning his sacking was unavoidable.

Mr Gibbs, however, said he did approach the board but was ignored after sending an email outlining his concerns, Radio New Zealand has reported.

Turners & Growers have announced that despite his dismissal, Mr Gibbs would continue in his role as company chairman and CEO Jeff Wesley said T&G was pleased Mr Gibbs would do so.

'Tony's leadership and direction has been a major driver of Turners & Growers' success and the strategy that has underpinned its growth,' Mr Wesley said in a media release.

'We are pleased that the company will continue to benefit from his experience and long-term vision.'
