Tesco has blamed an unnamed Spanish supplier for the presence of tomatoes with excessive levels of pesticides and herbicides on the shelves of one of its stores in Hungary.
The offending products were reportedly found by regional phytosanitary officials in the town of Szekszárd on 11 April although the UK-based retailer was not informed about the discovery until 21 April.
Tesco told Budapest Business Journal that it had been assured by Spanish supplier that the tomatoes met all Maximum Residue Level requirements, adding that it now planned to take action against the company concerned.
