Sams Club Wal-Mart

The changes made at Wal-Mart's Sam's Club stores, including the addition of fruits, vegetables and other fresh foods, has been given 'good marks' by retail industry analyst Bruce Peterson.

At the tail end of 2009, the club store operator announced that it would be remodelling around a quarter of its stores in the US to free up space for fresh produce, fresh foods, health and beauty items and over-the-counter drugs, with 33 store projects completed by the end of August this year.

Speaking to The Packer, Mr Peterson said that the group had done well with seasonal promotions of products such as raspberries, and added that the company had been careful not to have too many fresh food stock-keeping units.

'Costco is probably doing it better than anybody' among US club store operators, said Mr Peterson, who was formerly the head of Wal-Mart's perishable operations. 'But Sam's is really making strides,' he added.
