The group is targeting strong sales for the branded pear in its main market Germany from mid-October, while demand in eastern Europe continues to grow
Dutch marketer The Greenery says most of its members’ Sweet Sensation pears have now been harvested, with expectations high for a crop of just under 5,000 tonnes. According to sales manager Ton van Wiggen, the size of the pears is good this year, with the majority suited to retail requirements and hardly any small fruits.
As with other pear varieties, a number of Sweet Sensation growers have apparently had to deal with hailstorms during the growing period, which means there are likely to be greater quality differences from orchard to orchard this season.
Pears that do not meet Sweet Sensation’s brand requirements but are still of good quality, taste and colour, are sold under the brand name Sweet Dored.
“Based on the experiences of previous years, the market situation and the discussions we have had with our regular customers so far, we are looking forward to the season with great confidence for both the Sweet Sensation and the Sweet Dored,” Van Wiggen comments.
Sales of the pear will start in mid-October, with most sold in Germany and some shipped to the UK to be sold as ‘ready to eat’.
However, The Greenery says it has noted “a lot of demand” in Eastern European countries as well.
