Tesco store north UK

UK retail giant Tesco has said that up to 800 new jobs will be created when it launches its new distribution centre in Middlesbrough, northern England later in the year.

The creation of the centre in the area will mean that the Teesport Distribution Centre is linked to rail transport rather than road transport, retail operations director David Potts told the Associated Press.

'The benefits of Teesport are twofold and cannot be underestimated in the current climate,' he said. 'This investment is good news to job-seekers and for the environment.

'We need to increase our storage capacity to deal with increased levels of containerised goods and building a storage facility at the port delivers the facilities needed as well as jobs and environmental benefits,' Mr Potts added.
