The latest UK grocery retail market share data from Kantar Worldpanel has revealed that Tesco has grown its market share for the first time since November 2010.

For the 12-week period to 15 May, Tesco's market share increased to 30.7 per cent from 30.6 per cent, with Morrisons the only other 'big four' UK retailer to see a rise in market share, up to 11.9 per cent from 11.8 per cent.

Kantar said that Sainsbury's saw its market share remain steady at 16.3 per cent, following 25 consecutive periods of growth, while Asda saw its market share drop from 17.5 per cent last year to 17.2 per cent.

Outside of the so-called big four, Waitrose experienced growth from 4.1 per cent to 4.3 per cent, while the collective market share of German discounters Lidl and Aldi jumped from 5.4 per cent to 6 per cent.

Ed Garner, communications director at Kantar, noted that the four weeks leading up to the 15 May had seen yearly grocery growth rates up 7.8 per cent, boosted by the Easter period, warmer weather and the Royal Wedding.
