A new study collating customer satisfaction scores for the UK's major supermarket chains has placed Tesco, the country's leader by market share, at the bottom of the list.

The company gained a satisfaction score of just 45 per cent from the 11,492 people surveyed by consumer watchdog Which?, with the qualty of its fresh produce criticised, as well as its pricing, store environment and customer service.

At the opposite end of the scale, high-end retailer Waitrose scored an overall satisfaction rating of 82 per cent to top the table, gaining a five-star rating for its fresh produce quality and customer service.

Germany-based discounters Aldi and Lidl took second and third place respectively in the rankings, with scores of 74 per cent and 69 per cent, marginally ahead of premium retailer Marks & Spencer (68 per cent).

The rest of the so-called 'big four' received scores of over 50 per cent, with Morrisons (59 per cent), Sainsbury's (58 per cent) and Walmart-owned Asda (53 per cent) all finishing above Tesco, Which? reported.
