UK food retailer Tesco has promoted Colin Holmes, its commercial director for fresh food, to the company’s executive committee.
Mr Holmes has worked at Tesco for more than 20 years and was previously the group's finance director for the UK and Ireland and chief executive officer of its convenience store division.
A Tesco spokesman told industry publication Retail Week that the appointment demonstrated the company's ability to “spot talent in the business”, adding: “As we move into new markets investing in developing strong leaders becomes even more important.”
The move, which is being seen in some quarters as a way to prevent Mr Holmes seeking a new position outside the company, follows the departure of a number of major Tesco executives during the past year.
