Leading UK supermarket Tesco has begun selling a new variety of broccoli which it says is sweeter, highly nutritious and likely to prove popular especially with younger consumers.
The supersweet broccoli went on sale at the weekend as part of the retailer's Tesco Finest range.
Priced at £1.50 (€1.91) per 300g pack, the product is grown in Scotland and initially went on sale in 125 stores across the UK.
Tesco has previously stocked the trademarked broccoli variety Tenderstem under its Finest label.
According to Jeni Gray, brassica buyer at Tesco, the new variety is more tender with a lot of flavour, especially in the stalk.
The vegetable has deliberately been left with longer stems so that consumers can eat the whole floret and not just the heads.
'Finding a sweeter tasting green, especially broccoli, that is likely to be enjoyed by kids has long been a mission for vegetable producers,' Gray commented.
'We think that this new variety of broccoli will prove to be a real hit not only with kids but also with parents.'
