Tesco UK

Market analyst TNS Worldpanel has released the latest set of figures for UK grocery market share, related to the 12 weeks ending 1 November 2009, with Tesco in particular enjoying a successful three months.

The retailer saw its market share increase from 30.6 per cent last year to 30.7 per cent, the first time the retailer has seen growth since the end of 2007, according to TNS.

Tesco's sales growth rate of 4.7 per cent beat the market average of 4.4 per cent, as did the next three largest retailers, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

TNS data showed that Morrisons had shown the highest growth of these three groups, up 8.5 per cent, with market share up to 11.7 per cent from 11.3 per cent in 2008.

Waitrose saw growth of 12.3 per cent through the 12-week period, a sign that UK shoppers are 'shrugging off the recession', TNS said.

Discounters' market share remained flat at 6.1 per cent, showing no signs of the growth enjoyed at the end of 2008.
