Tesco, the world's third largest retailer, has announced a £200m (€234m) campaign to reduce the cost to consumers of more than 1,000 products.
The prices of mild onions, loose bananas and Lincolnshire Desiree potatoes will all come down by 10-15 per cent as part of a campaign that takes immediate effect across the company's UK stores.
Responding to disappointing Christmas sales figures and Asda's price guarantee scheme, Tesco has said it will give customers a voucher worth double the price difference if they find shopping is cheaper at its Walmart-owned rival.
The move comes in the week that Philip Clarke replaces long-serving Sir Terry Leahy as Tesco's CEO. New UK CEO Richard Brasher claimed the campaign will 'benefit every one of our customers'.
