Canada-based Oppy is expecting a one of its best-ever seasons for Enza Taylor's Gold pears in 2013, with fruit size and quality high and market opportunities set to be plentiful.
The group's apple and pear category director David Nelley said that the company is anticipating 'excellent quality and size' from the pear, which provides a distinct golden colour and boasts sweet, juicy eating qualities.
In addition, Nelley said that with US northwest pear supplies lighter this year, the market could open up for a premium fresh crop pear like Taylor's Gold, which will be supplied by Oppy from April to July.
Oppy is planning to help boost sales with a promotional push that will culminate in the announcement of the Taylor's Gold retailer of the year at the PMA Fresh Summit in October.
“The growers are up against a brutal exchange rate but they've done an excellent job, and Taylor's Gold is a pear worth celebrating,” Nelley said.
