Target

US retailer Target has revealed that it will stock a range of fresh foods when it opens its Canadian outlets in 2013, although the group has confirmed that it will not launch its full SuperTarget supermarket offering.

'Food, as it is in the US, will be a critical part of our assortment,' said Target president Tony Fisher. 'I can be confident we will have some of that fresh food.'

According to Planet Retail, the decision by Target to carry fresh fruit and vegetables in Canada will increase competition for local grocers and for retail giant Walmart.

'Food will definitely be part of our competition,' Fisher added. 'The breadth of our food assortment will vary by market... we're not a grocer. We don't try to be a grocer.'
