US producer and marketer Sun World International has announced the arrival of the first domestic harvest of its trademarked table grape variety AutumnCrisp.

According to the company, the variety promises a great deal in terms of the late-season, green, seedless grape category both in the US and abroad.

AutumnCrisp is a product of Sun World's grape variety development programme, the same programme responsible for developing other protected grape varieties including Midnight Beauty, Sable Seedless and Scarlotta Seedless.

The grape has apparently been developed by taking characteristics from Muscat varieties such as Italia and Muscat of Alexandria, crossed with seedless varieties such as Sun World's own Sugraone variety.

Sun World said the new variety would offer grower-friendly cultivation, naturally large berries and clusters, a firm, crisp texture and unique flavour profile.

'This first commercial harvest is demonstrating this grape's full potential as a promising late-season grape with beautiful flavour and strong post-harvest qualities,' commented the group's executive vice-president David Marguleas. 'Its fruit sizes naturally and easily with little manipulation.'

Marguleas suggested the grape's firmness and sweet flavour would set it apart from other green seedless varieties.

'One of the grape's most noticeable characteristics is its crisp texture, which is followed by a pleasantly sweet-juicy flavour and subtle hints of Muscat.'

The variety has already been distributed to a select group of international markets for testing, he revealed.

'Based on initial observations, we believe this grape will be a great success in many growing regions and we're excited to share with our international clients and licensees.'
