Murcia’s winter vegetable campaign has ended its season on a positive note, with producers in the southern Spanish region benefiting weather conditions described as “more benevolent” than those of previous years.

Broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke crops in Murcia all developed in line with expectations with “excellent quality” reported, thanks in the main to the absence of heavy frosts and normal temperature levels for the time of year that aided both the harvests and demand.

In a statement, Alfonso Gálvez Caravaca, from regional fresh produce association Asaja Murcia, said the campaign for the three products had closed with a “very positive” result because it had “developed strongly”, benefiting from better weather than recent seasons.

“The weather has been generous to Murcian producers in regards to the temperatures and the lack of major frosts, which allowed the crop to develop in a normal manner,” said Mr Gálvez.

According to the organisation, the stable climate also contributed to the recovery of the winter vegetable market, with harvest volumes and consumer demand both improving as a result.
