For the second time in two months, transport strikes have halted Pakistan’s fruit and vegetable exports.
The Business Recorder is reporting the strikes have delayed the delivery of over 2,000 containers across the country, after operations completely stopped at the port of Karachi and the Chaman border.
At least 1500 containers of Kinnow mandarins, potatoes and onions are feared damaged after they were unable to reach Karachi for consignment over the weekend, according to Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchant Association chairman, Waheed Ahmed.
More than 600 containers have also been stuck at the Afghan boarder for the last week.
Supplies to Afghanistan are suspended after negotiations over transportation charges and insurance broke down.
A long-running transport strike in December reduced Pakistan’s Kinnow mandarin exports by around 6,000 tonnes, at an estimated cost of US$23.4m.
