Freshuelva has reported that a larger berry production area during the 2012/13 campaign is expected to help push strawberry volumes in the region up 6.7 per cent on the previous year, with the crop rising to the 300,000-tonne mark.
The regional body for producers and exporters of berries in Huelva said that production area had jumped to 8,991ha from 6,830ha last year, based on data gathered from Freshuelva members, Europa Press reported.
This increase was largely down to a higher number of cranberry and blackberry plantings, Freshuelva said, although raspberry production area fell five per cent to 1,140ha.
