The group of companies based at the Port of St Petersburg in Russia have revealed that total cargo handling climbed to 12.1m tonnes in 2010, an increase of 5 per cent on the previous year.
According to the group of stevedoring companies based at the port, volumes of export cargo handled grew 5 per cent to 10.3m tonnes for the year, with import cargo volumes up 6 per cent to 1.8m tonnes.
A major part of the port's turnover was comprised of loose and bulk cargo, which totalled 5.3m tonnes or an increase of 7 per cent year-on-year, and general cargo, which grew 7 per cent to 6.7m tonnes.
The ongoing development programme of improving port infrastructure will see the continued construction of specialised modern facilities for handling profitable and environmentally friendly cargo, the port said in a statement, as well as the development of newly built and already commissioned facilities.
