Last week, the onion committee of Spanish fresh produce federation Fepex convened in order to discuss the critical situation in which the sector finds itself.
The low prices obtained by producers and constantly rising costs of production (by 54 per cent over the last five years) have put the onion sector in a “catastrophic” situation, according to a statement from Fepex.
The committee strongly recommends the formation of producer organisations to better organise the production and selling campaigns.
In 2008, the average price of onions stood at €0.26/kg, down by 37.5 per cent from the year before.
