In Spain, Fepex's Onion Committee has announced a forecast of 1.33m tonnes for the 2018/19 campaign, an increase of 2.6 per cent on the previous year.
At Fruit Attraction in Madrid, the Committee said that good weather conditions during all phases of production had resulted in a recovery of yields to normal levels after the low volumes suffered in 2017/18.
The rise in volumes comes despite a fall in planted area of 4 per cent to 24,205ha, Fepex noted.
Given a lack of large and average sizes in the European onion market, the Committee noted that the marketing campaign for the season could be 'interesting', with good opportunities to enter new markets with its high-quality product.
