Spanish consumers have eaten slightly more fruit and vegetable in January and February this year, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture's Food Consumption Panel, published by Fepex.
Latest figures show that consumption climbed 0.5 per cent in the opening two months when compared to the same period of 2015, up to 1.27m tonnes, while spending jumped 2 per cent to €1.74bn.
The increase was attributed to greater vegetable consumption, up 4.5 per cent to 433,000 tonnes, although vegetable spending actually fell 1.4 per cent to €711m.
Tomatoes and green beans lead the way for vegetables, while the consumption of lettuce and cabbage dropped.
Fruit consumption in households fell 1.8 per cent to 673,000 tonnes, with topfruit and citrus experiencing a fall, while fruit spend climbed 3.2 per cent to €912m.
