New data released by the Spanish Department of Customs and Excise and published by Fepex has shown that imports of fresh produce into the country fell in both volume and value terms during April.
On a year-on-year basis, April imports dropped 6 per cent in volume and 6 per cent in value, to 237,625 tonnes and €167m respectively.
According to Fepex, this was mainly the result of a decline in vegetable imports, particularly potatoes, with imports dropping 15 per cent in volume.
Vegetable imports stood at 112,868 tonnes, 17 per cent less than in April 2013, and value dropped 25.5 per cent to €51.4m.
Fruit imports, meanwhile, totalled 124,397 tonnes in April, growth of 7 per cent, and €115.6m in value, up 6 per cent.
