As part of wider import growth, France sent 20 per cent more fresh produce to Spain during the January-November period last year
Spanish imports of fresh fruit and vegetables from the EU grew by 12 per cent through the January-November period of 2024, totalling 1.9mn tonnes.
Imports from non-EU countries rose by 1 per cent year-on-year, hitting 2mn tonnes, according to statistics from the Customs and Excise Department, processed by Fepex.
Fresh produce imports from France, the main supplier to the Spanish fruit and vegetable market, climbed 20 per cent during the 11-month period, reaching 989,263 tonnes.
Portugal’s exports to Spain also increased 20 per cent, rising to 379,151 tonnes.
Morocco, the leading non-EU supplier, sent 398,826 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables to Spain, growth of 1 per cent.
”The continued increase in imports over time affects both suppliers, both EU and non-EU,” Fepex said.
”In the last five years of the period analysed (from January to November), purchases of fresh fruit and vegetables from EU countries grew by 27 per cent, from 1.5mn tonnes in 2020 to 1.9mn tonnes in 2024, and purchases from third countries grew by 25 per cent, increasing from 1.6mn to 2mn tonnes.”
