Cherries, citrus, persimmons and apples are among the products seeking to enter new markets

Spain’s Fruit and Vegetable Group said it made progress in 2024 in opening up new markets for Spanish-grown fruits and vegetables.

The group, made up of members of the Agriculture and Economy Ministries and representatives from leading fruit and vegetable organisations, worked on the opening of more than 16 countries for more than 26 products last year.

These included the opening of the Canadian market for cherries, Argentina for cherries and apples, Colombia for persimmons, Chile for citrus and apples and the US for stonefruit, apples and pears. The group also has China in it sights for cherries and Japan for citrus.

The group said it would continue to work in 2025 towards gaining access for Spanish products to new markets.

However, some exporters have expressed concerns over the slow progress in opening new markets. They point to countries such as Chile and Peru where this appears to be a higher government priority and negotiations take much less time.
