Soriana has reported a decline in first-quarter profit to 770m pesos, from 794m pesos in 2010, according to Reuters.

Mexico's number-two retailer after Wal-Mart de Mexico revealed a 5 per cent rise in costs, largely relating to the integration of 37 new stores in the past 12 months.

Same-store sales were down 2 per cent, a decline the company blamed on the late Easter holiday, which this year fell outside the January-March period.

Revenue rose from 22.25bn pesos to 22.4bn pesos.
