Central and eastern European markets should continue to offer good opportunities to expand sales of high-quality fresh produce in the medium to long term.
That's the view of Alexis Schlenew, managing director of Global Fruit Point Direct, a subsidiary of German importer and trading company Global Fruit Point that was established three years ago to expand the group's commercial activities east of the River Danube.
Speaking in the September issue of Eurofruit, Schlenew said confidence in central and eastern Europe remained largely intact despite the economic situation in many markets continuing to present challenges for importers.
'The future prospects largely depend on the overall economy in Europe, but we are confident that the situation will stabilise,' Schlenew told the magazine.
'We recognise that the eastern markets demand more and more the same qualities as western European countries – and are ready to pay for them – and this tendency will continue independently from the crisis.'
