Snow Italy

A wave of adverse weather across much of Europe is having a major impact on fruit and vegetable production in several parts of Italy, according to reports.

Concerns have also been raised that persistent cold temperatures forecast for the coming days may put open-field sources of fresh produce at risk across the country.

Farming association CIA published initial estimates pointing to damage worth millions of euros after heavy rains and flooding, as well as snow in some areas, hit trees and fields in northern, central and southern regions as well as the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

The CIA added that strong winds had struck fruit trees, causing 'structural damage' to orchards, and also protective tunnels used for growing vegetables.

In fields where seeds were planted during the past few weeks, replanting may be necessary, the organisation suggested.
