Just days after reports that Aldi Süd is beginning to shut down operations in Greece, it has been revealed that the German discounter is also looking to offload its Slovakian assets.
According to German publication Lebensmittel Zeitung, the retailer is to end thoughts of a launch in Slovakia by selling 15 land plots in the country as well as a distribution centre in Galanta, east of Bratislava, Planet Retail reported.
The paper suggested in its report that, in line with Aldi Süd's new priorities, the potential for growth in smaller markets is not strong enough to justify the efforts needed to begin operations.
Aldi is also thought to have put on hold further plans to develop markets in countries such as Croatia and other eastern European destinations including Romania.
