The port of Hamburg marketing authority has revealed that total throughput for the facility in the first quarter of 2016 was 2.5 per cent lower than the same period of 2015, down to 34.8m tonnes.
Contributing to the total were bulk cargo throughput at 11.5m tonnes, down 1.9 per cent, and general cargo throughput at 23.3m tonnes, down 2.7 per cent.
At 2.2m TEUs, container throughput for the quarter was also lower, down 3.4 per cent.
“Taken together, the downturns for the top three trading partners – China (down 8.0 per cent), Singapore (down 7.6 per cent) and Russia (down 4.9 per cent) – constituted the main factor affecting our result on container handling,' said Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.
