Simone Spreafico, head of production and exports at Italian company Spreafico, has been appointed as vice-president of the newly created Kiwifruit Consortium of Italy.

Spreafico joins Alessandro Fornari, director of Consorzio Kiwigold, who was named as president of the new consortium when it was officially established in August.

It is with a great responsibility and pleasure that I take on this role, because I believe the birth of the new consortium could play a fundamental role in guaranteeing the right value for a product like kiwifruit, which for Italy is one of the most important products at international level," he told the Corriere Ortofrutticolo.

The Kiwifruit of Italy consortium brings together nine firms – Spreafico, Naturitalia, Salvi-Unacoa, Granfrutta Zani, Frutta C2, Orogel Fresco, Pempa Corer, Minguzzi and Consorzio Kiwigold – who, together, represent more than 100,000 tonnes of green kiwifruit production in Italy, or around 20 per cent of the country's total crop.

The companies have said they will work together to establish minimum production and marketing standards they say will improve the overall quality and image of Italian kiwifruit on the world stage.
